Woodcut Prints and Other Work

What originally fascinated me about woodcut prints, especially the Japanese prints in the Ukiyo-e tradition, was the process that produced these beautiful images. Each print required a group effort. The artist did the preliminary sketches, refined the images and drew out the plan for each block. One print often required many different blocks, one for each color used. The work would be passed on the print shop where many hands did the work of carving the blocks, inking and printing the images. The Ukiyo-e prints are evidence of incredibly fine work.
My rough interpretations, while fun to do, are much too coarse and free-styled to be in the same category!  But they are a fascinating way to produce prints. These woodcut prints are printed from cherry blocks. Some are printed in layers from several different blocks and some include mixed media.

"Creativity makes a leap, then looks to see where it is."  Mason Cooley

When we look at a particular work of northwest coast art and see the shape of it, we are only looking at its after-ife.  Its real life is the movement by which it got to be that shape.  Bill Reid, Haida carver

"It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism. There is no such thing as good painting about nothing."
Mark Rothko, artist
