Invisible

4/29/2015

When I was a child I remember arguing about what super power would be the best to have.  I decided I'd like to be invisible.  I used to imagine all of the things I'd get away with, places I could slip into, conversations I could overhear.
Last week I was at a schmooze fest.  It was one of those events where dignitaries, nonprofits, community leaders mingled with artisans and art organizations.  I dread these kinds of events and it didn't take too long before a sour mood set in.
During the event I saw that I had realized my super power--I had become invisible. I don't know if it was my age or my gender or my introversion showing but from the invisible vantage point I watched as interactions happened, impressions were launched, people thanked each other for being thanked, so many platitudes and gratitudes--it was so interesting to observe unnoticed.
Now that I am invisible I've gained these insights:

  1. When everyone is trying to impress no one is listening
  2. Knowledge is not the same understanding
  3. Numbers really can lie
  4. Networking to seek status can yield many shallow connections
  5. Networking for quality yields fewer, deeper relationships
  6. When done well, networking is a building process
  7. When done for the purpose of competing rather than connecting, you get exactly that: You gain a competitor and lose the connection.

2 weeks ago the topic for class included Vincent van Gogh.
This past week the dermatologist cut off a bit of my ear...
I feel your pain Vincent, a little bit anyway

"Creativity makes a leap, then looks to see where it is."  Mason Cooley

When we look at a particular work of northwest coast art and see the shape of it, we are only looking at its after-ife.  Its real life is the movement by which it got to be that shape.  Bill Reid, Haida carver

"Creativity is not the finding of a thing, but the making of something after it is found"  James Russell Lowell, American Poet

"It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism. There is no such thing as good painting about nothing."
Mark Rothko, artist
